From the Field to the Patent: The Story Behind SPIN
The story of a sales guy who watched lightning protection fail — and built the alternative.
I sold lightning rods for years. I believed in them. I trained distributors on them. I installed them on airports, telecom networks, solar farms, villas, hotels, industrial zones, you name it.
Then the field started talking back: strikes landing meters from the rods, trees split beside “protected” buildings, radio rooms destroyed at a site that followed every standard to the letter.
In 2020, I came across a product that looked wrong: the CMCE from Sertec — no point at all, and a claim that flipped everything upside down: instead of catching the arc, prevent it from forming. I contacted them, we worked together, and I learned a great deal. But there was a problem: it was a great product — at a price most of the world couldn’t afford.
That’s when I found Tesla’s 1918 patent — a design so complete that my attempts to improve it failed against every detail. In 2025, I built my first Lightning Protector Tesla as faithfully as modern manufacturing allows.
It’s called SPIN. It’s Tesla’s design, built a century later, at a price that finally makes prevention accessible.
